Re: Things I Like
mixed feelings about the dresden dolls. i got their first album when i was like 14, and even then i was ambivalent. it's like some of the music was cool, but then at the same time, some of it was just too emo, haha. emo-haters might even annoy me more than emo kids, but still...they were just a little much for me. i haven't listened to anything more recent though really, so i can't really say much more about it. i still love girl anachronism though!
Re: Things I Like
the dresden dolls and amanda plamer are awesome, you should really listen to some other stuff.
but i can understand that you don't like them. amanda palmer writes very emotional songs that is true, thats kinda why i like the music and of course the way the music and the lyrics fit together. and seeing her play live is also amazing (i haven't seen the dresden dolls, but i imagine it similar to the solo shows)
one of my friends got me into the dresden dolls and amanda palmer.
you should listen to guitar hero, leeds united, runs in the family, oasis all of these are from "who killed amanda palmer".
"no, virginia" is better than "yes, virginia" in my opinion, but the first one is still the best one!
but its just kinda hard to pick songs from the records.

yes, virginia (their second album) is fantastic. i don't really listen to the first album that much. i really love their later work. and amanda palmer is amazing. one of the greatest artists of our time. have you seen 'with the needle that sings in her heart'? amazing.
Re: Things I Like
my friend wrote this on my wall:
So today, in my musicology class, we were talking about women in punk, and someone said "even today, if you think about it, there aren't many good girl guitarists. I mean, I can't think of one." I bitchslapped her and yelled "KAKI KING!!"

Now I'm pissed off haha If it's just a matter of dexterity, I should say there aren't many girl-shredders out there (although your classmate should consider checking out Michael Jackson's guitarists, Orianthi and Jennifer Batten. The latter is a two-hand tapping goddess!!). If it's a matter of attitude and good guitar playing regardless of musical style, then I have to say just one word. RIOTGRRRLS!!!!Not to mention other great female musicians, like Mary Timmony, Zöe Keating, Amanda Palmer, Regina Spektor, etc etc etc
So, yeah, one thing I like is the Riotgrrrl Movement!
Re: Things I Like
my mom posted a video of orianthi on my wall-- "i think you'll love MJ's female guitarist," as if 'female guitar' is a totally different instrument.
Interviewer: now you're a female guitarist, which is increasingly common, but still fairly unusual. what do you think about female guitar's absence in popular music, and what guided your decision to pursue female guitar?
Female guitarist: well, i started out on traditional guitar, but i picked up the female guitar when i was about eighteen. i think a lot of rock musicians have ignored the female guitar, because they think it's more limited than traditional guitar. but recently, i think people have been coming to find that once you reach a certain level of technical proficiency on the female guitar, there really is a wide range of sounds that you simply can't achieve on traditional guitar. a lot of the jazz records i listened to growing up incorporated the female guitar, and occasionally transgender guitar, which has a really interesting sound, even if it is somewhat more obscure. i just bought a transgender guitar, and i've been tooling around with it for the last few weeks. i'm still a really long way from mastering it, but i'd really love to overlay some transgender guitar on some of the tracks off my next album. and my asian female drummer has actually started getting me interested in the idea of bringing in some traditional guitar as well.
i had too much fun with that....

Re: Things I Like
haha i was just imagining an interview if female guitar was actually a diff instrument
Re: Things I Like
the lesbian guitar, although sometimes mistaken as a completely different instrument, is actually a specialized type of female guitar. compared to the lesbian guitar, the bisexual female guitar shares more similarities with the standard female (or 'heterosexual female') guitar--however bisexual female guitarists also frequently employ techniques associated with lesbian guitar.
Re: Things I Like
Ok, that's it! You should definitely become a musicologist, or a music journalist, or -even better- my manager! Btw, Brian, my guitar, is a bisexual because he was named after Brian Molko LOL!!!
Re: Things I Like
i dunno about manager, but if you need a publicist, i could probably bs you to great fame.
Re: Things I Like
LOL that was fucking hilarious alex!, what about the asexual guitar? ok that just sounded too weird

Re: Things I Like
well i know that some have pushed the idea of guitar not only as an asexual instrument, but also as a gender-neutral one. however, most experts dismiss that position as too radical.

It's a deal, then! I'll be responsible for the legal stuff and (of course) the music, and you'll be my publicist. Press releases will be on post-it notes
As for the asexual guitar...Maybe Morrissey should play guitar parts on his next record. If you ask me, though, I believe that all string instruments (guitars included) are of female gender, because they remind me of the female body. Therefore, female guitarists should be worshipped as goddesses hahahahhahahaha! (Hey, Rolling Stone mag, we need more girls on your lists!)
