I recently discovered a man by the name of Louis Wayne. He was a schizophrenic cat painter. The longer he lived, the crazier he became, and it was apparent he was losing his mind in some of his works. It seems as if you sense his amount of paranoia or fear when you would gaze at one of his works of art. I think everyone should look him up and check out some of his art. You can see cool images and designs within his bizarre paintings. This piece I did was inspired by Wayne. I call it "Fish Tank."

That's pretty neat. What was your medium/technique?

I didn't paint this or anything. I'm not that good. It was all done by the computer using adobe illustrator. I'm not even sure of my technique because I just made one of the red/blue boarders and copied and pasted 4 times. Then there was the empty space in the middle and I just filled it in. I didn't really plan any of it, I just put in whatever came to my mind.

Let's share our art....Audio or Visual. Empty ...

Shoot... You probably shouldn't put yourself down. That's a good start, even if digital technique isn't as highly regarded as more traditional ones are. Anyways, I do some digital work myself, not so much in Illustrator, but in GIMP (which is a free open source graphics editing program). What I figured out was that if I first did some work in pen and ink on paper and then scanned it in, I could manipulate it digitally and then print it out on a transparency to lay on top of the hand-made image. It's kind of tricky at first to do it with pen and ink, but if you get yourself some acrylic paint, a few brushes and a canvas or two you can most likely create some pretty interesting abstract and/or impressionistic images that you can then SCAN and work with in Illustrator (or Inkscape, or Photoshop, or GIMP, or what have you). Then you can print them out on a transparency (Kinko's will do this for you, for around $1.50 a page, or you can use a custom print shop like I do to get a higher quality print on specific material). Paste them together, and voila; you've opened up another dimension to your artwork with a relative minimum of physical effort.

Anyways, as far as the "cut & paste" thing goes, you can take that to extremes. I've done it before, quite extensively in fact. There's even a filter you can get for GIMP that automatically mirrors the image. There's also a fractal transformation filter too, which is pretty neat.

As far as planning goes, I just tend to enjoy letting my tool do the exploration... Planning shouldn't be something that you micromanage...

That sounds cool. I'll have to look into GIMP. Do you know of any places that would be able to put designs like this on clothing? I was thinking of making a few shirts with that design and a couple of other ones.

Let's share our art....Audio or Visual. Empty Screenprinting

Post  Guest Tue Oct 12, 2010 3:14 am

I used to work in a screen printing shop; we did work for a lot of Colorado bands. There are a few options as far as printing onto fabric goes. You can do a traditional screen print, which typically uses plastisol ink (basically liquid PVC pipe), or more eco-friendly water based inks (more expensive). There's also sublimation, which is useful for "all over" type prints, but it tends to wear out quicker. Then there's direct to garment printing, which is basically just using a printer on the garment itself.

If you're interested in ordering a good amount (50+), I can put you in touch with the shop where I used to work. Otherwise, there are several sites on the web that can handle printing; Cafe Press is the first one that comes to mind. They're fairly reasonable, and they do small orders (1+ shirts). They also have a large selection of different garment labels to choose from, including American Apparel.

There was also this DIY DTG (direct to garment) printer I saw on Hackaday:

A nice project if you're handy.
